What is the best time to visit Bhutan?

Spring (March – May) and fall September – November) are the two best seasons for visiting Bhutan. Summer can be very rainy due to monsoon, and winter tend to be be cold in the northern half of the country. 

How do I get my Bhutan Visa? Does it take long?

As a visitor, you have to purchase a tour package from a licensed Tour Operator based and registered in Bhutan and pay the minimum daily tariff for the duration of your stay. Your tour operator will process the Visa for you. You can expect to get your visa 1-2 weeks before your arrival to Bhutan as is the norm.  

What does the tour package include?

All our tour packages include:

  1. Mandatory sustainable development fee of USD200/day/person.
  2. A mandatory licensed tour guide fluent in English
  3. A professional driver.
  4. All ground transport within Bhutan.
  5. All meals and accommodation within Bhutan*
  6. Bottled drinking water or the duration of the tour. 
  7. Museum and other entry fees.

* For 5-Star dining and lodging, you have to pay separate for these.

What are not included in the daily tariff?

  1. Travel insurance
  2. Travel to and away from Paro International Airport
  3. Tips for drivers, guides and porters
  4. Alcoholic drinks
  5. Personal expenses

Are there mandatory additional costs?

Tourists travelling in a group of two (2) persons or less shall be subject to a surcharge, in addition to the minimum daily package rates.

These are as follows:

  1. Single individual – US$ 40 per night
  2. Group of 2 persons only – US$ 30 per person per night

Can I bring alcohol and cigarette into Bhutan?

Yes, you can. However, it is subject to the following limits:

  1. Spirits: 1 bottle not larger than one liter
  2. Cigarettes: 1 carton (containing 200 pieces) subject to 100 percent customs duty and 100 percent sales tax (nominally at 1,600 Nu per carton)

Can I get connected to the internet in Bhutan? 

Yes you can! Both Bhutan Telecom and TashiCell offer tourist SIM cards that have high-speed 3G and 4G data. In addition, most hotels that you stay in will have wifi. You can also always use a good old internet café should need be!.

What will happen in the case of a medical emergency?

It is highly recommended you get a private travel health insurance that can cover the cost of medication and, if necessary, emergency evacuation. Bring enough of medicines if you are on medication. In addition, our guides and drivers will do their utmost to get timely assistance to you. Medical emergencies related to accidents are rare as our guide and drivers are experienced at pointing out and reminding visitors about risks beforehand. What is a good amount of spending money to bring along?

Your food and accommodation are covered in the package. If you feel like a few pints of beer (or other alcoholic drinks), as well as some nice fancy 4 or 5 start dining experiences, bring a few hundred along! If you want to do a lot of shopping and tipping, bring a few thousands. In other words, any amount is OK. However, do bring a some emergency spending money along.

Can I extend or shorten the duration of my stay in Bhutan after I have booked and payed for trip with Crooked Fir Travels?

You can change the duration of stay in Bhutan up until Crooked Fir has made all non-changeable hotel and flight bookings. Requests will be dealt on a case by case basis based on flight and hotel availability. However, we will do our best to render the best service possible to you in this regard!

What if I want to add one or more person(s) to the our tour group after I have finished paying for my trip?

Crooked Fir will deal with such request based on a case-by-case basis. We will look at flight and hotel availability before we make any promises. But we promise that we will do our best to fulfill any such request.

What if I want to cancel my tour to Bhutan?

Unfortunately, cancellation fees apply because we have to make ticket and hotel bookings that are also subject to cancellation policies. At CF, we will charge cancellation fee on a case-by-case basis based on sunken costs.

For your reference, here is a normal cancellation fee structure that many other tour agents use:

  1. 45 Days before arrival: 10%
  2. 30 Days before arrival: 20%
  3. 15 Days before arrival: 50%
  4. 7 Days before arrival: 75%
  5. 1 Day before arrival: 100%

 

Are there group discounts? What about other types of discounts?

Tourism council of Bhutan provides discounts for groups as follow:

  • There shall be no charge other than visa fee of USD 40 for children below the age of 5 years.
  • Full time students below the age of 25 years, holding valid identity cards from their academic institutions, shall be given 25% discount on minimum daily package rate.
  • A 50% DURATION DISCOUNT on SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FEE shall be provided after the 8th night and 100% discount on SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FEE shall be provided after 14th night.
