Bhutan is a nation unique in time and space. It is the last great Buddhist Kingdom of the Himalayas where people also enjoy democracy and all the modern amenities that make life comfortable. At the same time, decades of holistic growth and careful preservation of its tradition and culture has resulted in a land rich in culture and tradition. The people are educated but genuinely hospitable and fun-loving. People paint phalluses all over their building, and eat more chili in a year than potato. It’s a land brimming with colorful festivities, breathtakingly beautiful  landscapes and vales hung in clung over cliffs. It is a journey into the pristine and the unknown. 

Facts about Bhutan

Size

Bhutan has a land area of 38,394 sq. km which is divided into 20 Dzongkhags (cantons). It has a population of about 7,50,000.

Monarchy

Bhutan's Wangchuk Dynasty ascended the Golden Throne on December 17, 1907 - also celebrated as national Day. Currently, the 5th King rules the country.

Firsts

As a latecomer to modernization, Bhutan's first paved road was completed in 1962! In 1989, it made its first feature film. Television and internet arrived in 1999.

National Animal

The takin (Budorcas taxicolor) is the animal of Bhutan. In Bhutanese mythology, the Divine Madman fused together a goat and a yak to create it!

Biggest Book

One of the biggest books in the world is called Bhutan: a Visual Odyssey. It is a giant photo-book containing photos taken by MIT and Bhutanese photographers.

Most Trees Planted

Bhutan made Guinness World Record in 2015 when 100 volunteers planted 46,672 trees in 1 hour. It was to celebrate the Coronation anniversary of the 4th King.
